About the #OneLessThing Challenge

sacrifice in order to raise money to help cure Multiple System Atrophy, a rare and terminal neurodegenerative disorder affecting thousands of middle-aged adults around the world.

The big question:  What is one thing you can do without that costs money or was purchased and can be sold?

  • Is it going to a coffee shop, going out to eat once per week, going to the movies, etc.?
  • Is it selling some DVDs, furniture, or clothes on eBay or at a Garage sale?
  • Is it giving up a round of golf with your buddies?
  • Is it not purchasing a new TV or electronic tablet?

#OneLessThing to Support the CrowdRise Holiday Challenge

We are also in the midst of a very important CrowdRise Holiday Challenge and still need $35,000 in donations to hit our full matching gift pledge of $150,000.  What better time of the year to take the One Less Thing challenge the during the Holiday season and to donate your challenge windfall to the MSA Coalition via the CrowdRise Holiday Challenge page.  This means every dollar you donate will be matched and help the MSA Coalition to secure a top cash prize as well.  Here are a few ideas for #OneLessThing you could live without over the next two weeks.  Just cut and paste if one makes sense to you and share it on your social accounts:

What #OneLessThing that you buy today can you live without to #FightMSA and donate the difference to MSA Research,

The list is endless.

After you have decided what to do without, the money you have saved or earned by taking the “1 Less Thing” Challenge should be donated to The MSA Coalition.  100% of your tax-deductible donation will be used to fund important research if it is donated via the CrowdRise Holiday Challenge by December 31 that hopefully will lead to finding treatments and a cure for multiple system atrophy.

We also want to raise awareness for MSA and we need your help to make it happen.  After you have decided what you will sacrifice for the 1 Less Thing Challenge we need you to make a video.  Describe what you are giving up, how much it costs and then challenge three friends to take the challenge or donate.  Post your video on YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook (and check the “public” box) and let’s see this challenge go viral!

Great News:  We have received a matching pledge of $10,000.  This means that if you are among the first to take the 1 Less Thing Challenge your fundraising efforts might be matched dollar-for-dollar until we have raised $10,000.

Sample Scripts/Ideas for the “OneLess Thing” Challenge video:

A patient with MSA:

My name is ________, and I’m taking the One Less Thing Challenge to cure MSA. MSA stands for Multiple System Atrophy, and like ALS, MSA is a progressive neurological disease with no cure.  I actually have MSA, diagnosed in ____.  The autonomic nervous system in my body is progressively failing, and I also have Parkinsonian movement and balance challenges. I especially could do with one less thing in order to make a donation to help cure MSA.  Because we’ve never been closer to a cure!  So for the month of April, I’m pledging that my family of four will eat at home instead of eating out, and will donate $400 to the MSA Coalition. And now, I would like to select three people to join me in taking the One Less Thing MSA Challenge: __________, ___________, and __________.  Guys, if you choose not to give up one less thing, you can donate $100 (or more) to the MSA Coalition at www.MultipleSystemAtrophy.org.

A spouse/caregiver

My name is ____________, and I’m taking the One Less Thing Challenge to cure MSA. MSA stands for Multiple System Atrophy, and like ALS, MSA is a progressive neurological disease with no cure. My spouse, _________ has this disease, and it has been life-altering to entire family. My spouses autonomic nervous system, which runs many of the body’s organs and systems, is progressively failing, and he also has Parkinsonian movement and balance challenges. My Spouse is my MSA warrior, and so I could do with one less thing in order to make a donation to help cure MSA.  I’m actually placing six personal or household items on E-Bay in the hope of raising at least $600-$800, with all proceeds donated to the MSA Coalition. And now, I would like to challenge 3 friends to join me in taking the one less thing challenge:  _________, ____________, and _____________.

A friend of an MSA Patient:

Every year I go on a guy’s golfing weekend and play 1-2 rounds for 3 straight days. I’m going to play one less round of golf, and donate $120 to the MSA Coalition to help cure MSA.  I am also challenging my 3 golf trip buddies – _______, _______, and ________ to join me in giving up one round of golf on this year’s trip.

Children that want to support the cause:

My grandparent has multiple system atrophy and I want to help find a cure.  I’m giving up my allowance for the whole summer and donating $30 to the MSA Coalition.  I’m challenging my cousins ________, _______, ands ______ to take the 1 Less Thing Challenge.

Anybody that wants to help:

Every day after I drop my kids at school, I go to a coffee shop. For the month of May, I’m going to make my own coffee at home, and donate $100 to the MSA 1 less thing challenge to cure multiple system atrophy.  I challenge my friends ___________, _________, and ________ to take the challenge by giving up one thing and donating to the cause.
